LOVE WITH CHRIST
Read 1 John 4:7-12
I started dating a girl the end of my senior year of high school. At that time I thought she was "the one." We spent a lot of time together doing the things most teenagers do on dates, each of us believing that we would be together forever.
However, something was missing in our relationship. My girlfriend had been baptized, but she only had been to church a half dozen times in her life, mostly for weddings and baptisms. She did not really know much about Christ and His great love for us or what faith is. She did not know God and was set on not bringing Him into our relationship.
As a Christian, this placed a great strain on me. Getting my girlfriend to come to church with me often meant I had to bribe her. I would buy her gifts to make her happy. It seemed like a worthwhile sacrifice because she was going to church and maybe was learning about the love of God. Gifts were not the answer, though; her heart was not open to Christ. Every opportunity I took to talk to her about my faith was met with indifference and a closed mind and heart.
A relationship with Christ at the center is difficult. As young adults, many temptations come into a relationship. Overcoming these temptations can be done only with the strength Christ gives. Most important, sharing the same faith and the love of Christ strengthens a relationship.
True love is a gift from God. It was displayed when He created human life in a perfect world, demonstrated again when He sent Jesus to die for us (1 John 4:9), and is seen every day as we build relationships with family members and with others even in dating situations. Christ demonstrated His love for us so we can share love with others.
Put God and His love into your relationships. His love will strengthen the love you share and can make it last. Find someone with whom you feel comfortable talking about Christ, someone who will share your faith in Christ. The relationship will grow and be strong with the help of God! Remember, love and relationships are gifts from God.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of relationships. Help me always to place Christ at the center of my relationships. Let them grow with Your love as the center, and help me always to remember that relationships and the love shared between people are something you designed. In Jesus' name. Amen.
